CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO THE 2010 KENNEDY ARTS CENTER PROGRAMS


Call for nominations to the 2010 Kennedy Arts Center Programs

We are pleased to announce a call for nominations to the 2010 Kennedy Arts Center Programs. All nominations should be sent electronically to Tony Perez at PerezAS@state.gov. The nomination form is at the end of this document.

The eight programs are:

1. The Fellows Mentoring Program (a three-week program to be held in the U.S.A. March-April 2010). Nominees should be 25-35 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: October 28, 2009.

2. The Technical Theater Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. March-April 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old).
Deadline for submission of nominations: October 28, 2009.

3. The Jazz Musicians Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. April-May 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: October 28, 2009.

4. The Theater Actors Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. in May 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: December 11, 2009.

5. The Theater Directors Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. in January 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: December 11, 2009.

6. The Hip-Hop Dancers Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. in July 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: December 11, 2009.

7. The Classical Music Performers Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. in August 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: December 11, 2009.

8. The Modern Dancers Program (a two-week program to be held in the U.S.A. in September 2010). Nominees should be 19-30 years old.
Deadline for submission of nominations: December 11, 2009.


PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:

1. The Fellows Mentoring Program: This three-week program offers professional development opportunities to individuals working in the field of arts management. Fellows will participate in classes at the Kennedy Center, spend a week in a practical mentorship with another organization, and spend time in New York City meeting with arts managers. The goal of this program is to further develop arts management skills in strategic planning, development, and marketing, and to provide cross-cultural understanding internationally.

Participant Profile: The Kennedy Center is looking for individuals working in the field of arts management who are seeking to improve their management skills. These participants should be between the ages of 25 and 35.

2. The Technical Theater Program: Theatrical designers will have the opportunity to participate in the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) annual conference that includes workshops, demonstrations, and networking opportunities [http://www.usitt.org/2010]. Participants will also visit performance venues and meet with theater designers to discuss their work. Participants should expect to work with a mentor theatrical designer to further develop a design project of the participant’s choosing. This program will take place in Washington, D.C. and Kansas City, Missouri in late-March/early April.

Participant Profile: Trained in Theatrical Design (i.e., Scenic, Costume, Lighting or Sound Design) at an advanced or post-college level; professional theatrical design experience; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Allow participants to work one-on-one and in small groups with a U.S. theatre designer to further develop a specific design project
-Exposure to new techniques in theatrical design via the USITT conference and meetings with design professionals
-Establish ongoing dialogue with leading theater designers

3. The Jazz Musicians Program: Participants will experience jazz music through participation in meetings, workshops, lessons and jam sessions with musicians in the U.S. Participants can expect to visit Jazz Fest, held annually in New Orleans [http://www.nojazzfest.com], and attend performances and workshops. This program will take place in April/May 2010 in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Participant Profile: Trained as a musician at an advanced level with professional performance experience; has knowledge of, and experience playing, jazz music; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Enhance understanding of jazz music and its evolution in the United States
-Establish ongoing dialogue with American jazz musicians

4. The Theater Actors Program: Participants will receive an overview of United States acting techniques with a specific emphasis on actor training both professionally and in a university setting. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet with a variety of theater companies in Washington, DC and another city in the United States. This program will take place in Washington, D.C. and a second city during May of 2010.

Participant Profile: Trained in acting at an advanced level with professional performance experience; has keen interest in expanding knowledge of acting techniques; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Exposure to various acting techniques through observation and participation in classes and attendance at performances
-Learn how professional actors are trained in the U.S. and how one is able to make a living
-Establish ongoing dialogue with American actors

5. The Theater Directors Program: Theatrical directors will be able to see performances in several different genres of theater and meet with highly-respected theater companies and directors in both Washington, D.C. and another city in the United States. Participants may also have the opportunity to observe multiple stages in the rehearsal and performance process. In June 2010, this program will take place in Washington, D.C. and a second U.S. city.

Participant Profile: Trained in directing for the theatre at an advanced level with professional directing experience; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Learn directing techniques via hands-on interaction with professional American directors
-Increase knowledge of directing by observing rehearsals and attending performances
-Meet with American directors to understand directing as a profession in the U.S.
-Establish ongoing dialogue with American directors

6. The Hip-Hop Dancers Program: Participants will work with renowned hip-hop dancers, exploring the history of hip-hop culture and dance in the United States. Participants will attend the International Illadelph Legends Festival (Philadelphia, PA) produced by Rennie Harris Puremovement [http://www.rhpm.org/illadelph.php]. Illadelph takes place over 7 days in July and includes master classes in hip-hop dance, lectures, and demonstrations. This program will take place in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, PA and New York, NY during July 2010.

Participant Profile: Trained in the hip-hop dance technique at an advanced level with performance experience; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Meet with individual dancers and dance companies to understand hip-hop dance in the U.S.
-Attend hip-hop dance intensives to increase knowledge of and proficiency with the form
-Establish ongoing dialogue with leading American dancers

7. The Classical Music Performers Program: Participants will take lessons from professional musicians such as members of the National Symphony Orchestra and/or the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. Participants may also attend festivals and learn about other types of training programs for classical musicians in the United States. They should expect to visit a summer music festival, where they will attend master classes and performances. Evening performances may include classical and contemporary music. This program will take place in Washington, D.C. and a second U.S. city.

Participant Profile: Trained in classical music performance at an advanced level with professional performance experience; string musicians preferred but not required; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Increase knowledge of classical music techniques and understanding of the instrument through private instruction and classes
-Experience how string musicians in the U.S are professionally trained
-Increase knowledge of classical music training techniques
-Establish ongoing dialogue with American classical musicians

8. The Modern Dancers Program: Participants will further their knowledge of modern dance technique through demonstrations, private lessons, and open classes with representatives from major modern dance traditions in the United States (e.g., Graham, Horton, Limon, Cunningham). Additionally, they will interact with a number of American modern dance companies, including Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Mark Morris Dance Company, CityDance Ensemble, and Paul Taylor Dance Company. In the evenings, dancers will attend performances. This may include the Fall for Dance Festival (New York, NY)[http://www.nycitycenter.org/content/stage/ffd.aspx], a series of modern dance performances by major US and international dance companies which takes place over 11 days. This program will take place in Washington, D.C. and New York City, NY during September 2010.

Participant Profile: Trained in Modern Dance at an advanced level with professional dance performance experience; multiple dancers from the same company are encouraged to apply as a team; plans on staying in the field/teaching for at least the next 5 years

Goals/Objectives:
-Increase knowledge in modern dance techniques through exposure to professional modern dance performances
-Understand modern dance management and facilities through meetings and tours
-Meet with individual dancers to learn the specifics of the modern dance industry in the U.S. and establish ongoing dialogue
